Marketing Methods
Basic List of Marketing Methods
On Site / Web Site
The most obvious method for advertising, is on site advertising. This type of advertising can consist of anything from text link advertising, to banner advertising. Almost every web site you visit has some form on on site advertising. When buying banner advertising on a web site, advertisers are usually paying on a monthly or CPM (cost per 1,000 views) basis.
Social Networks
Two of the major social networks with great advertising platforms are MySpace and Facebook. The huge benefit to advertising on social networks, is that you can heavily target your ad campaigns to nearly any demographic. MySpace accepts several different banner sizes for ad campaigns, while Facebook offers 120×80 images and text advertising. Both platforms are setup for CPM or CPC bidding.
Search Marketing / Pay Per Click
The bread and butter of affiliate marketing is known as search engine marketing or “pay per click”. When you go to google and search for any term, you will see an a separate listing of sites on the right side of the page called “Sponsored Links”. Advertisers are listed in this section because they are paying to be shown on the first page of search results, by bidding on specific search terms. The major search engines for PPC advertising are Google, Yahoo and Bing.
Pay Per View
Over the past year, pay per view or PPV advertising has grown tremendously. PPV advertising is usually in the form of a pop under window which spawns when the user visits a web site. PPV advertising is very cheap, and can cost lower than a penny per view, but can also send thousands of impressions within minutes. When advertising with pay per view campaigns, you select what interests/web sites you want your popunders to appear on.
Email / Mailing Lists
Another effective type of advertising is done through email and mailing lists. The difference between regular email and advertising and building up a mailing list is crucial. When sending out emails for affiliate marketing / profit purposes, you are usually sending out solo mailings with just an advertisement. These emails are usually from site visitors when they fill out surveys, forms or request to receive mail from third parties. The other type of mailing is when you are trying to build up a mailing list for your web site or product. In most cases, you are trying to build up a loyal readership and don’t want to spam your readers. The profit in a mailing list is that the readers will keep coming back, and actually enjoy your mailings.
So what is affiliate marketing?
You, the affiliate, via your website, drive traffic to a merchant's site.
The merchant may be selling a product eg DVDs or e books, or they may be trying to sign on clients eg a bank.
The merchant pays you a commission once the visitor has completed the desired action eg bought a product or completed a registration form
The merchant knows that the visitor is from you because you link to the merchant's site through a special affiliate link. This link is unique to you and you alone.
Other affiliates will have there own special affiliate link which is different from yours.
Although different affiliate marketers for the same product have different, unique affiliate links, all these links point to the same website, the merchant's website.
The affiliate aims simply to drive as much targetted traffic as possible to his/her own unique affiliate link
The beauty of this is, once your site is up and running, you can continue to earn money from it whether you are in bed, on holiday or sleeping.
This is called passive income.
It is passive because after the initial effort of researching your chosen market, building a website and setting up your campaign, you can continue to earn from this with very minimal day to day input in your campaign.

[Efficient] How to market your Affilate Sites
Once you have an affiliate website up and running, how do you drive traffic? What are effective methods of bringing qualified traffic, both online and offline? Here are a few methods, for both beginners and more experienced marketers.
Online Marketing
What’s great about online marketing is how trackable it is and how fast it can work. In just days after launching an online campaign, you’ll know exactly how well it’s working. You’ll know what’s effective and what’s not.
Where can you get traffic from online? Here’s a (non-comprehensive) list:
* Google AdWords
* Google Content Network
* Banner ad buys
* Other Search PPC: Yahoo, MSN, etc.
* Third-tier networks: AdBrite, 7 Search, etc.
* SEO
* Article marketing
* Co-registration
* Third party PPC: Facebook PPC, MySpace PPC, etc.
The list goes on and on. Start testing which traffic sources work for you and your business, at first on a small scale; then expand it as you get more traffic.
Offline Marketing Methods
Many super affiliates believe offline is where it’s at. While online marketing is extremely competitive among affiliates, offline is still relatively untouched.
How do you get traffic offline?
At the most basic level, by getting cheap exposure to your website. In fact, one of the most profitable dating affiliates did this using a very simple, very affordable method.
He put signs all over a city saying “Single? Go to SanMateoDating.com” (where San Mateo is the city). He started by buying domains of his local cities and sticking his own lawn signs all over the place.
Once it was clear that the business was a success, he then expanded his business and bought hundreds of domains and outsourced thousands of signs. Today, his business earns hundreds of thousands of dollars a month.
This is just one example of how a very simple advertising method expanded and scaled can earn some very serious money.
Where can you generate traffic offline? Here are a few places to look into:
* Classified ads
* Radio ads
* Magazine ads
* Newspaper ads
* Direct mail
* Flyer advertising
Classified ads are a great place to start because they’re so cheap and so scalable. If you find something that works, you can buy classifieds all over the world.
If you’re buying magazine or newspaper ads, consider doing a direct mail postcard campaign first. Often times your buy-in will be less and you’ll be able to gauge whether or not a specific audience will convert for less money.
When you’re buying any kind of “media,” i.e. TV, radio, magazine, be sure to negotiate hard. The rate card price is very overpriced; in fact you can get a 15% discount by just asking for the “in-house agency discount.” In general, you’ll want to be paying somewhere around 30% less than the rate card price, at least.
We’ve just covered a lot of different ways to drive traffic, both online and off. Pick one of these methods and test them out for yourself. If you have a great website, then you almost definitely have one or more converting traffic sources out there just waiting to be found.
